This was the first 'Mean Girls' centred fanfic that I came across. In it, the writer has made Cady have romantic feelings towards her maths teacher Ms.Norberry. I understand why this fanfic was created, as it strays from the storyline in an intriguing way. However it wasn't my style, and I felt uncomfortable with this new weird plot. It was written in basic story-telling style, like a novel or short story might be. It was 3rd person, told from an outside perspective. When I write my own fanfic I intend to use first person style from main character Cady's perspective.

This fanfic was in 3rd person, looking at situations between main character Cady and several other charaters who star in the film. This also had a very sexual twist to the original story-line. In it, Cady kisses and has sexual encounters with several characters from the film- Regina George, Gretchen Weiners, Aaron Samuels and Janis Ian.The title indicates that they were just imaginings of Cady, however I took it to mean that they were all possibilities for the story. Again, I found the girl-on-girl action a wee bit forward for my liking, but the fanfic was well-written and engaging. The characters all matched up to mannerisms they displayed in the film.

This fanfic was in first person from Cady's perspective. It was an extension of the original text as opposed to a stray from the storyline. In it, Tina Fey's character Ms.Norberry gets married to her subtle love interest throughtout the film, school principal Mr.Duvall. She is expecting his child and the fanfic just explores the possiblities of that. I wasn't particularly engaged by this story, but it did make clear the constant flirtations between the two characters throughout the film.

This fanfic is in 3rd person. This shows how Cady's school life would have been had she not chosen to ditch her friends (Janis and Damian) for 'The Plastics' (Karen, Gretchen and Regina). Of course, in the original text Cady leaves her friends to seek popularity, and evenutally becomes a mean girl herself and is forced to face the fact that she has changed for the worse. It also shows the dynamic between the plastics after all the drama with the previous year. Aside from some serious grammatical and spelling errors, I really enjoyed this fanfic. It explored how Cady's life could have been, whilst also reinstating just how evil Regina really is. I found this appealing.

This fanfic is a crossover of Law and Order: SVU and Mean Girls. It is told in 3rd person. Regina George had gone missing and was found brutally murdered with the word 'BITCH' carved into her forehead. This, of course, links to the main storyline of the original text as she was unfriendly, rude and downright nasty to everyone. It also raises speculation as to who, of the many characters we witness being wronged by her in the film, did the dirty and killed her. The writer of this fanfic definitely succeeded in creating a compelling crossover story.

This is a crossover fanfic of Jennifer's Body and Mean Girls. Regina George is telling the story (so it's in 1st person from her point of view) and it is basically about how Jennifer thinks she is too good to hang out with Regina. Regina doesn't like this, because, as we know, she likes the sound of her own voice and has a constant need to be in control. The writer clearly had a good understanding of Regina's character. My fanfic will be based around Regina also, making this fanfic even more relevant to me.

There are SO many Twilight fanfics online, and it has been difficult to find Mean Girls fanfics. I came across this Twilight/Mean Girls crossover, written in 1st person from Bella/ Cady's point of view. The dialogue from Mean Girls was used, while the character traits of Bella and other Twilight characters were used. For example, the opening scene dialogue from Mean Girls was used, but instead of saying "It's Cady's big day!" her father said "It's Bella's big day!" They also changed the title to Mean Boys, using Edward and the other Cullens as the popular group. I'm not over-keen on Twilight but this was still a clever twist and I think it worked really well.

This was the weakest of the Mean Girls fanfic that I came across. It might be mainly because of the length. Being extremely short, it didn't have much space to expand on the story-line. In fact, this scenario could have occured in the actually film and not been out of place. It was a straight compare to the original film, and written in 3rd person describing a conversation between Cady and Regina. I didn't enjoy it because it was 'boring' and didn't engage me whatsoever.

In the original film Mean Girls, character Janis Ian is quite a moody and almost gothic character. She has an upsetting past with Plastics leader Regina George, as in middle school Regina spread a rumour that Janis was a lesbian. Although she is not actually homosexual, the rumour still hurt Janis and she has therefore got a strong grudge against her victimiser. This fanfic explored the past between the rumour, and was extremely well-written and engaging. I really enjoyed this fanfic. It was written in first person from the point of view of Janis, and told the story of Regina coming onto her as opposed to the other way around. The writer of the fanfic had looked into a very intriguing and interesting concept. He/she is clearly familiar with Janis' character, as the dialogue was spot-on to how Janis would speak. Everything that happened also linked into the plot of the film. This was my favourite Mean Girls fanfic.

Not an admirer of Mean Girls per say, but i do respect Tina Fey as a writer. She has a distinct comedy/writing style that i thrive on. She brings elements of sarcasm and awkwardness that stems from Saturday Night Live (which she use to Head write for) and for that sheer reason, hats off. Very Nice piece though, and nice analysis. I'll be "following" your blogs (Not in a stalkerish way).

ReplyDeleteThis is a good range of perspectives and a mixture of settings of Mean Girls’ fanfics. It is interesting to know how the fandoms of the ‘Mean Girls’ are related to the main characters of the original film. For example, one fandom’s crossover of ‘Law and Order’ shows the way that s/he tries to satisfy themselves by making the hated one be killed. In another a crossover of Twilight is also intriguing enough to attract my attention by changing the theme to the ‘Mean Boys.’ What are the ‘mean boys’ supposed to be? I simply can’t imagine. So in the movie, anyway, poor Cady has turned out to be even worse ‘mean girl’ by trying to be popular for herself?!! It’s just so funny. Good job!
